Background

The Abaraka Award is a grant offering up to $3,000 every 2 years and presented to African American women in visual arts to advance their creative practice and professional growth.

Funded by collectors Aissatou Sidime-Blanton and Stewart Blanton in partnership with the San Antonio Ethnic Art Society, the award supports the completion of a specific arts-related project within 12 months. It is a one-time, non-renewable grant designed to advance the recipient's creative project offering.

Purpose

The Abaraka Award supports the ongoing careers of female artists and arts professionals by funding meaningful artistic projects. It also fosters a passion for visual arts among girls and young women under 21, encouraging the next generation of creative leaders.
